Reigns began his career in the football world, playing for Escambia High School and then Georgia Tech. After going undrafted in the 2007 NFL draft, Reigns signed as a defensive tackle with the Minnesota Vikings but was eventually released. He then played for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League before retiring from football and pursuing a career in professional wrestling.


Reigns joined WWE's developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) in 2010 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 2012, he made his main roster debut as part of The Shield, a faction of three young and talented wrestlers who quickly made an impact on the WWE.
